Not long back Bing changed the name of the “Bing Business Portal” to “Bing Places for Business”, and a while before that Bing removed the “review” part of their “Places” listings. For this reason you may think that there is little reason to create a listing with them (beyond the standard URL submit) but from my research I do think there is value in this.
The Bing Places for Business portal, much like other web directories, allows you to create a free business listing, and add images and details about the business (hours, payment options, etc).
What’s new is that Bing now allows you to add links to videos, yet Bing no longer allows one to create daily deals or coupon offers, and they’ve also discontinued collateral options such as QR codes and their free mobile website.
The value of having a Bing Places page is that your business details will come up in their “local” search, with a location map, and other business details. I just changed my listing, which you can see the partial “pending” local listing shown below.
If you don’t yet have a Bing Places account in place visit https://www.bingplaces.com/ and “sign in” if applicable, or select the “get started” button to create a new one. Here you have the choice of entering your phone number or business name w/ location. Upon submit your business name will come up with a “select and edit” button (with the option of add new business) if you have more than one.
As for editing, most of the options are the same, though I noted that they now have a special link category for Facebook and Twitter, where previously this would have been added as alternate web pages links.
Verification is provided for in two ways. Initially you need to verify that you own the address by adding an XML file, or some code on the pages. Uploading the XML file is the easiest option, wherein you simply FTP it up to the “public html” directory. Once your listing is completed you will need to verify again by way of a “pin” through phone, so also quick and easy.
All in all the Bing Business Portal is not what it once was, which is why they have partnered up with Yahoo in the hope of joining together to take away market-share from Google. Bing has made some strides in the Mobile market, but they still have a long ways to go considering that their site ranking algorithm is not as complex as Google’s, and in my opinion the results are much less applicable when doing a search.
